MY LUCKY DAY
So, today I was out scouting the potential location for a friend’s up coming birthday, the KCB Leadership Center. I walked in wanting to speak to the catering manager and was met by a man called David Omondi. He runs the in-house restaurant which has been taken over by Valencia caterers. As I walk into the restaurant I see fully set tables and a number of people dining. It dawns on me that I have come on a day that there is an event or training and it’s lunchtime to boot. “Wrong timing”, I’m thinking. David is probably very busy and we won’t have enough time to hash out the details. “We have a buffet, get a plate and have something.” David says. Aaaargh! Crap. Now I have to have a rushed meeting while choking down some dry, nasty, mass produced food AND act like I’m liking it. Just my luck. Damn my politeness!
I was pleasantly surprised! They had two nice salads and a variety of dressings to choose from. I passed on some of the offerings like the chapati and muthekye, and had some basic rice and baked chicken cooked in thyme. It tasted quite good, The dressings were well made, and the chicken was very moist and tender. Not haute cuisine, but a very good effort on their part. Thanks David, chef Obonyo & the Valencia team.
Qn: What’s better than a good meal on a budget?
A: A good meal for FREE! ;-)
THE BIG KNIFE
The Big Knife is a Turkish Shawarma joint in the CBD. Located opposite Nakumatt Lifestyle, on the street facing Jevanjee Gardens, they serve chicken and beef shawarma wraps. Like a Turkish tortilla. My boyfriend Maina suggests that we go there for an experimental bite since we were in town. Fine… I mean, new thing to try. i’m rarely in town, so it’s now or never… So, we go. It’s a tiny place at the corner with limited seating (about 15 people max, half of whom are college students) and luckily as soon as we get in, a table clears up.
They sell the shawarma wrap at 250 bob a pop so, if the food is good, this could be a hit! We order the beef wrap to share ( I wasn’t really hungry). As Maina was ordering at the till, he noticed that the ‘chef’ and waitress are in a heated argument. Anyway, he puts the order in and comes back to sit. 5 min later our chicken wrap arrives. Yes, I said chicken. As you remember we ordered the beef. They couldn’t change it for the right order as they didn’t want to have to deal with the ‘chef’, “We are under a lot of pressure, so please just have that one”.* We did, because we didn’t want to cause trouble.
How was it? Quite bland. Sorry to say. Chicken needs to be infused with a bit more flavour to make it stand out, which is why I refrain from ordering chicken when out (food poisoning is another reason but to a lesser extent). It wasn’t. I could barely taste it. I did not get ill and the whole wrap would be filling, but those are the only two redeeming qualities. You will be full, and not be sick. Period.
* This is a very sensitive topic for me and I will talk about it at a later date. Possibly tomorrow.
